Pinnacle of Ultralight Tent Design

The X-Mid Pro 2 is the pinnacle of ultralight tent design. It combines our maximally weight efficient and stormworthy X-Mid geometry with Dyneema® composite fabrics (DCF) and a singlewall design to create a tent that is both incredibly light and incredibly capable. The 2024 version weighs as little as 17.9 oz (509 g) while also bringing unprecedented stormworthyness, simplicity, spaciousness, and build quality to the super ultralight tent niche.

SPACIOUS

Until the X-Mid Pro 2, if you wanted a 2P tent for a little over 1 lbs you had to settle for something cramped, delicate, and/or lacking in weather protection.

The X-Mid Pro 2 changes that. It provides a spacious interior for two adults with a generous 90″ floor length, ample 46" width, steep end walls to maximize useable length, and best-in-class headroom enabled by the unique geometry with a diagonal ridgeline and opposite diagonal floor. It fits hikers up to 6’4″ (dual occupancy) or 7’0″ (solo occupancy).

Also generous are the dual 11.6 sq ft vestibules which are large, tall, and conveniently place the main area beside the door instead of blocking it.

Want it even more spacious? Check out the X-Mid Pro 2+.

STORMWORTHY

The stormworthiness of the X-Mid Pro 2 is excellent thanks to the extremely strong Dyneema composite fabric combined with the high performance X-Mid shape. The X-Mid has the ideal shape for wind and snow because the geometry gives all of the panels slopes that are consistently and moderate. There are no horizontal roof panels to catch snow, nor vertical side panels to catch wind. The tent pitches solidly with just 4 stakes, while peak and side panel guyouts can be added along with 8 extra stake points around the base if conditions warrant.

More than just surviving, the X-Mid Pro 2 keeps you comfortable in tough conditions with it's protected pitch (keeps the floor dry during setup in the rain), protected doorways (keeps the rain out even when open), dual peak vents which minimize condensation, and full coverage fly that can extend low to the ground to block rain splatter and drafts yet can be lifted higher for increased ventilation. Competing tents trim away the bottom of the fly to save weight but this leaves you more exposed to drafts and rain splatter. The X-Mid Pro 2 further enhances comfort in tough weather with its large interior space, and generous vestibules.

USER FRIENDLY

The X-Mid Pro retains the user friendliness that the X-Mid tents are highly regarded for. Unlike most trekking pole tents, the rectangle based X-Mid has a simple 4 stake pitch with no mandatory guylines, no measuring or estimating odd angles, and no struts.

Once pitched, the intuitive minimalism continues with magnetic door toggles, doorways that aren’t blocked by poles, vestibules that put the main area beside the doorway instead of blocking it, a tensioned floor that lies taut and wrinkle free, and one handed operating zippers.

The X-Mid Pro also has a remarkably small packed size because of the efficient use of materials, less bulky floor material, and lack of struts which complicate packing up the tent.

Magnetic Toggles

Magnetic door toggles with pull tabs provide easy one handed-operation.

Doorways

Unlike most trekking pole tents, the doorways are large and not blocked by trekking poles.

Full Coverage Fly

The fly extends low to the ground to block drafts and rain splatter, yet can be raised for more ventilation. Other tents cut away the bottom of the fly to save weight but it leaves you more exposed.

Tensioned Floor

Small corner struts and cords tension the floor so it lays taut and easy to clean. Competing tents hang the bathtub floor from its top edge (like a bag) which saves weight but is more prone to wrinkling and sliding around.

Peak vents

Dual peak vents minimize condensation.

QUALITY

In addition to the highest performance design, the X-Mid Pro has industry leading quality. That starts by using premium materials like Dyneema, and assembling them at the most experienced tent factory in the world for DCF.

We use hot bonded construction to create Dyneema seams that are stronger, cleaner looking, and better retain their strength in extreme temperatures. We also use a proprietary pre-shrinking process for DCF so that the shape is more stable over time and won't deform or shrink to create wavy zippers like most other DCF tents. Additionally, we use thoughtful design and reinforcements to avoid stressing the fabric diagonally (on the 'bias') which adds costs but prevents premature degradation.

PATENTED GEOMETRY

The X-Mid shape has been developed from the first principles of geometry to be as weight efficient, simple, and functional as possible.

That includes avoiding all the common pitfalls of trekking pole shelters such as a complicated pitch, mandatory guylines, poles blocking the doorways, and a lack of interior volume.

As one of the lightest tents in the world yet remarkably spacious and capable, the X-Mid Pro 2 is the ideal tent for everything from a thruhike of the Continental Divide Trail to bikepacking across South America.

Good design, big footprint

This review compares the Durston with the Zpacks Duplex, the tent I have been using for the last 5 years. I bought the X-Mid Pro 2 with the sil floor. Both tents are single wall, trekking pole supported tents using DCF for the fly wall. I do most of my backpacking in the Sierra and also sections of the PCT, in generally dry environments with occasional storms.

The Durston design has a lot of nice features compared to the Duplex, such as the poles being set to the side of the mesh door, the door 'hinge' set along the upper side of the tent instead of the bottom, the stow pocket being set up at mid level, and the little vestibule cubby where you can store gear regardless of whether the fly door is open or closed. Also the sil floor allows the tent to be rolled up more tightly than a DCF floor would.

The workmanship of the tent was good. No issues with weathertightness. I did have a couple minor issues with the pull string knots coming undone, but those were easily fixed by re-knotting them.

The Durston's biggest weakness is the large footprint of the tent, much larger than the Duplex, due to the design of the vestibule. This won't be an issue in most cases, but I can think of some tight places on the PCT where I have been able to set up the Duplex right next to a bush by attaching one of the tent apex points to the bush (instead of a guy line). That workaround wont really work with the pro 2. Also, in 2 person mode the Durston preferred configuration is to sleep head to toe. That works on flat surfaces, but if sleeping on an incline most people will sleep with their heads on the same side, meaning one will be under an apex and the other will be under a low lying tent wall. Finally, the Duplex vestibule doors are a little more flexible. On a couple nights I had a difficult time optimizing condensation vs cold air using the two doors (and vents) provided with the Durston, and felt I would have had an easier time with the Duplex's four doors.

As with all trekking pole tents, there is a learning curve. Both X-Mid Pro 2 and Duplex tents need to be set up a few times before one gets the hang of it. I found watching the Durston set-up video to be very helpful. That said, I found the Duplex to be slightly easier and more intuitive to set up and get a good pitch.

11 nights in the books

I bought the x-mid pro 2 tent last winter and have finally had it out "in the wild" on 2 trips in a variety of campsites. I love the tent. I went with the 2 person for the space it gives me to do my evening stretches, but it also allows me to fit all my stuff inside, leaving very little out in the vestibule(s). I love the two doors that let me decide which one is better to exit/enter. Setup has been a breeze, though I did practice a few times at home first. Even in locations where I couldn't get a large enough level spot, there was some forgiveness that had the tent sitting perfectly when set. I've slept in it with a vestibule open to watch the stars and with it all zipped tight against the cold and wind. Each has worked wonderfully. The magnet door straps are great. The one issue - and it's not my issue - is that my backpacking buddies give me crap because the footprint is a bit large. It's true that you do have to find a spot with enough space for everyone when you have multiple tents. They call it the Taj Mahal (trail name = Taj). I don't think there's a way to make the vestibules smaller, but if there is, please let me know how. :) Looking forward to many more years of adventures!

First trip - light and sturdy

Used for first time on 5 night trip to Glacier National park. The tent was rock solid even in 40+ mph winds. I used 8 stakes instead of 4 for the high wind nights. Was completely dry for the one night it rained. Only minor complaint was condensation after the first night but there was no condensation after the other nights. There is tons of room for gear and one person. Two people would be tight but doable if smaller. It's easy to setup with hiking poles and obviously super light. I highly recommend if you are bigger and looking for a large 1 person tent that is super light.

Glad you're liking the tent Ed. Glacier looks amazing.

For condensation, venting helps but sometimes it can be unavoidable (if the whole area is cold and humid). In those cases wiping it down with a small towel (e.g. Swedish cloth) can be nice, but usually the condensation does not get that bad where it is needed.

Saved 2 Pounds

It took only 3 times for me to be very comfortable setting up my new Durston X-Mid Pro 2. Based on videos, I was afraid it would be really difficult. Basically, stake it out in a rectangular shape and insert your adjustable hiking poles. No rain can get inside. I saved almost 2 pounds compared to my BA CS HV SL 2. A big weight savings is the hiking poles which I use all the time without exception. I haven't done a long trip yet. That will be next summer. Can't weight! Look for my review on YT.

@JonsDadHikes

Awesome. Good luck on your upcoming hikes!
