Pinnacle of Superlight Tent Design

The X-Mid Pro 2+ is the ideal tent for partners who want a superlight yet stormworthy backcountry palace. It expands our award winning X-Mid Pro design into a larger 2+ size that accommodates two wide pads while weighing just 19.2 oz (545 g). More than just an amazingly light and spacious tent, the X-Mid Pro 2+ is also impressively capable thanks to the Dyneema® fabrics and X-Mid geometry which provide greater strength and protection for the weight, while retaining the simplicity our X-Mid tents are revered for.

SPACIOUS

The X-Mid Pro 2+ takes the X-Mid geometry (which naturally boosts interior volume) into a larger form factor to create an oversized 2P tent that is palatial for two people and optimized for sleeping two people in the same direction (head to head).

Compared to the regular X-Mid Pro 2, the floor has been widened from 46" to 52" (1.32m) to accommodate all wide (25" / 64 cm) pads. This makes it the world's lightest tent that can fit two wide pads (based on the tent weight + minimum number of stakes). The already excellent headroom has also been increased with a taller 49" (1.24 m) peak height. This adds headroom and also steepens the end walls to increase the useable length for hikers up to 6'6". We also reduced the rotation of the diagonal ridgeline to create more even headroom on both sides to optimize the tent for two people sleeping in the same direction. Compared to competing A-frame style tents, both sides of the X-Mid Pro 2+ have substantially more head clearance.

What hasn't changed are the dual generous vestibules, which are large enough to fit the biggest packs and conveniently place the main area beside the door instead of blocking it. No other tent provides this combination of simplicity and space at such a low weight.

STORMWORTHY

The X-Mid Pro 2+ is a hybrid/singlewall tent that provides the excellent stormworthiness the X-Mid tents are highly regarded for. It combines ultra strong Dyneema® Composite Fabric with an ideal shape for handling wind and snow loads because the geometry gives all of the panels a consistently moderate slope. There are no horizontal roof panels to catch snow, nor vertical side panels to catch wind. The tent has a robust structure with 2 poles that makes it stronger than similar pyramid style tents, yet still pitches solidly with as few as 4 stakes. In stormy conditions, the tent can be reinforced with peak and side panel guyouts and up to 12 stakes along the base.

More than just surviving tough weather, the X-Mid Pro 2+ is designed to provide a more comfortable experience in tough conditions. It does that via a long list of protections including protected doorways (to keep falling rain out), a fly first pitch (to keep the floor dry), and a wind stable pitch (not vulnerable to collapse at any steps). Unlike other tents in this class, the X-Mid Pro 2+ still has a full coverage fly that extends low to the ground to block drafts, spindrift, and rain splatter - yet can also be lifted higher for increased ventilation. Competing tents trim away the lower part of the fly to save weight but this leaves you most exposed.

The X-Mid Pro 2+ further makes tough conditions more liveable with its spacious interior, large practical vestibules for storing wet gear, and dual peak vents that minimize condensation.

USER FRIENDLY

The X-Mid Pro 2+ has a focus on simplicity and ease of use because when conditions are tough you want a tent that works effortlessly.

Most notably, the X-Mid Pro 2+ has the same simple pitch the X-Mid tents are highly regarded for. The rectangular base is intuitive to stake out and the tent can be pitched with as few as 4 stakes. There are no odd angles or distances to estimate, no struts to complicate the process, and no need to measure the pole heights because the fly will naturally limit them to the correct height.

Once pitched, the ease-of-use continues with magnetic door toggles on the fly, along with magnetic door toggles on the inner doors (an industry first). Entry is easy with large doorways that are not blocked by trekking poles (like most competing tents). Instead, the X-Mid puts the vestibules beside the door in an easy to reach spot which also creates a shorter reach to close the fly. The X-Mid Pro 2+ also provides a tensioned floor that lies taut and wrinkle free, dual doorways, dual vestibules, and premium zippers that operate one handed.

Dual Magnetic Toggles

Dual magnetic door toggles allow not only the fly doors to be easily secured but also magnetically secure the inner doors (an industry first).

Doorways

Unlike most trekking pole tents, the doorways are large and not blocked by trekking poles.

Full Coverage Fly

The fly extends low to the ground to block drafts and rain splatter, yet can be raised for more ventilation. Other tents cut away the bottom of the fly to save weight but it leaves you more exposed.

Generous Space

A generous 52" wide floor fits two wide rectangular pads, while the larger size and X-Mid geometry give palatial interior volume.

Peak vents

Dual peak vents minimize condensation.

QUALITY

In addition to the highest performance design, the X-Mid Pro has higher quality than any other tent Dyneema tent. We build these tents at the most experienced tent factory in the world for Dyneema Composite Fabrics using hot bonded technology that gives stronger seams than quicker cold taping or sewing methods. Our production process also includes a proprietary pre-shrinking process for Dyneema® so the shape is more stable over time and is avoids shrinkage over time which affects other Dyneema Composite Fabrics tents. Additionally, we use thoughtful design and reinforcements to avoid stressing the fabric diagonally (on the 'bias') which adds costs but prevents premature degradation.

We also go a step further in many other ways including tighter tolerances for panel dimensions than other brands, a long list of additional requirements and checks, and pitching each tent twice for quality inspections before it ships to you. This premium quality gives the X-Mid Pro 2+ a substantially higher cost of production than competing tents.

PATENTED GEOMETRY

The X-Mid shape has been developed from the first principles of geometry to be as weight efficient, user friendly, and functional as possible.

The result is a tent that is a joy to use because it avoids all the common pitfalls of trekking pole shelters such as a complicated pitch, mandatory guylines, numerous required stakes, poles blocking the doorways, struts that make it awkward to pack up, vestibules that put the main area in front of the door, and an awkwardly long reach to close the fly doors.

The palatial X-Mid Pro 2+ is the world's lightest tent that can accommodate two wide rectangular pads, while also being highly stormworthy and user friendly. It is the ideal tent for everything from a thru hike of National Scenic Trail to a traverse of Alaska's Brooks Range.

The best tent I've ever purchased!

I purchased this tent from Japan.

First, I'd like to express my respect to Dan and the entire team for creating a product that's loved worldwide.

This tent meets all the criteria I was looking for at a high level: lightweight design, durability, and excellent livability for family use. While the DCF material makes it slightly less packable, this is within acceptable limits.
When dealing with harsh natural environments, I believe prioritizing durability, quality sleep, and comfortable living space is the right approach, which led to my purchase decision.

I used it for tent camping during mountain climbing in Japan, and I was satisfied with its water repellency and weather resistance using two trekking poles.

Since this was only my first use, I look forward to experiencing its long-term durability and comprehensive after-sales support as I continue using it over time.

Disappointing for a tent of this price

I had been wanting the Durston X‑Mid Pro 2+ for a long time. It is very expensive, so I expected top quality. Some small details are not ideal, like no points to hang a line inside the tent, very small exterior loops for guy lines, and the two mesh pockets are placed quite high. None of these are major issues. But:

I first took it on a thru‑hike on the Isle of Skye, where I noticed bigger weaknesses. The setup is difficult if the pitch is not perfectly level. After watching several videos, I got better at it. It also has a huge footprint, which makes finding a spot tricky. There is great headroom when sitting but not when lying down. The high profile also performs poorly in wind.

At around 45km/h wind the tent already started to come apart: the corners went slack and the structure was very unstable. I tightened everything as much as I could, used a low pitch, and all the stakes were still solid. I used all 14! stakes, including every guy line point, but it was still not wind‑resistant. Very disappointing for a tent of this price.

Because of these issues, I plan to sell it.

Hi Maurus. Sorry to hear you haven’t been having a good experience. The pitching issues you’ve experienced should be solvable with adjustments to the pitch.

In high winds, we normally see very good results if the tent is pitched well including numerous confirmed reports over double the windspeeds you experienced. In your case, the tent might have not been tight enough, but also it sounds like the cords might have slipped in the corner tensioners so it lost tensioner. If so, we can send out a bit thicker cord that holds better. If you snug up the 4 corners tight and make sure the stake are good and the trekking pole are extended quite firmly, then it should do well in high winds. It’s not a 4-season tent for severe conditions, but we’ve seen them handle 80-90 km/hr fairly well and 45 km/hr should be no problem.

For a level surface, the tent is not more affected by this than other trekking pole tents and you can adjust the pitch to compensate for uneven ground, as we show at 8:00 in this video. With those techniques, I think you could have good results without needing anywhere near 14 stakes.

We also have a way to collapse the vestibules if you do need to fit into a small site:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHdK4LXGuRQ

For those smaller things, I’m not sure if your tent is older, but they do have hang loops inside the peaks now. If you want a larger loop at the peak guylines, you can tie a loop of cord to the smaller tab of webbing.

Thanks for using our gear,
Dan

Design relies on poor performing zipper that is sensitive to dust

This review is for the X-Mid Pro 2+ DCF floor tent. The pros are well publicized by others so here are the cons after using for about 12 nights:
1) The design relies on a zipper that is sensitive to dust i.e. zipper stopped working (sliding well or at all) until given a bath, toothbrush cleaned and lubricated with zipper lube.
2) Poor zipper performance leads to low confidence that zipper will hold up over time given that tent design puts tension stress on a weak zipper.
3) Tent is bulky i.e. takes up a lot of volume when folded and rolled.
4) Footprint takes up a lot of space, requires very large site to pitch.

Thanks for sharing your concerns. The zippers we use on these tents are YKK #3, which are the same zipper you would find on almost any ultralight ultralight tent. The tension on these zippers is fully adjustable, so the tent does not require high tension on a weak zipper, but rather there is fully adjustable tension on a normal lightweight zipper. Two tips to avoid unusually high stress on the zipper are to deploy the door stake at an angle (see link) to take tension off the zipper, and also to avoid tensioning the corners excessively tight.https://youtu.be/fOJ4BKIoKGs?si=KfkkDWg1Zvn9Rtw0&t=327

It is true that zippers can be contaminated by sand such that cleaning is required, which is the case for any tent zipper. If that happens a lot, it can wear out the sliders but those are easy to replace. The only time there is a more serious problem is if the teeth are torn off, which is due to a high force incident such as someone tripping over the tent or being pitched with excessively high stress or tightening the corners when the door is open and then forcing it closed. Incidents like that are accidents or user error but still, if that happens we support all owners with free zipper repairs. So if you ever did have a problem with the zipper we would help out at no cost.

With regard to bulk, we use a version of Dyneema for the floor that is less bulky than other brands so it does pack smaller than comparable tents but yes, a tent with fully woven fabric would be smaller yet. It is about 10% larger than the regular X-Mid 2.

It is true that trekking pole tents will tend to have a larger footprint because the walls can't curve steeper at the bottom, and the X-Mid Pro 2+ is a generously sized tent, so together that increases the footprint area. However, if someone needs to fit the tent in a smaller site there is a way to collapse the vestibules so it pitches about as small as any 2P tent. We have a video on that here:

Pleased

I was impressed with my x-mid 1 and Durston trekking poles. The tent stood up to a sudden thunderstorm immediately after I first pitched it on a real backpacking trip. Water puddled underneath and everything stayed completely dry.

When I bought the tent and ground sheet, I received the 2-person ground sheet by mistake. Customer service let me keep that and sent a replacement 1-person version. According to my math, that meant that I should buy a 2-person tent! The lighter weight and even simpler pitch makes this truly great. The space inside is fantastic, as are all the thoughtful design features. It held up to strong winds despite my imperfect pitch on sloped terrain. I added a guy line to help correct the shape and to reinforce a weak spot.

After lightening my pack, tent, and poles with Durston products, I have been able to bring loads of luxury items to enhance my shorter multi day trips. Even an 8-lb kayak and paddle setup. Bravo

Nice :) Glad you're liking both tents.
