X-Mid 2

Sale price$319.00 USD

The X-Mid 2 has been updated for fall 2025 with additional fly reinforcements, more double stitching, and thicker cordage. These changes build on the early 2025 updates of high precision narrow seams, redesigned pockets, improved hardware, and our new 15D high tenacity silpoly fabric that substantially lowers the weight while retaining similar strength.

Pinnacle of Lightweight Tent Design

The X-Mid 2 has been developed from the first principles of geometry to be the most weight efficient and functional design for a trekking pole shelter. Its innovative and patented geometry makes the X-Mid 2 exceptionally stormworthy, spacious, and simple at the lowest weight. No other tent offers this level of space and protection for just 1.9 lbs (880 g / 31 oz), which is why the X-Mid 2 has become one of the most popular tents on demanding trails and one of the most highly awarded tents in recent years including top awards from BackpackingLight, The Trek, and Section Hiker.

STORMWORTHY

Most ultralight tents achieve their low weights by shrinking the size and trading durability and stormworthiness for weight savings. In contrast, the X-Mid 2 saves weight through efficient design such as a trekking pole structure that is both stronger and lighter than traditional tent poles, and a geometry that maximizes the volume possible from the fabric area. In doing so, the X-Mid 2 achieves its low weight while also being a robust shelter for tough conditions.

X-Mid 2's long list of protections include a doublewall design, full coverage fly (extends low to the ground to blocks drafts and splatter), fly first pitch (keeps the inner dry during setup in the rain), polyester fabric (doesn't sag and loosen like nylon), large adjustable vents, robust waterproof coatings, durable fabrics, factory waterproofed seams, and protected doorways that keep rain out even when open. No other tent offers this full list.

In addition to this set of protections, the X-Mid shape is well suited for windy and snowy conditions because every panel is at a consistently moderate slope. Other tents have flatter roof panels that catch snow and flatter sidewalls that catch wind, while the X-Mid 2 puts every panel at a balanced 50-55 degrees to deliver strong all around performance.

USER FRIENDLY

In tough conditions you want a tent that just works, which is why obsessive attention to detail has gone into making the X-Mid 2 simple and intuitive.

That starts with the simple pitch that goes up quickly with only 4 required stakes. There are no mandatory guylines, odd angles, measurements, and struts, which is a stark contrast to most trekking pole tents.

The ease of use continues when the tent is pitched with large doorways that are not blocked by trekking poles, roomy vestibules that are located beside the doors instead of blocking them, magnetic door toggles, handy pockets, and one handed operated zippers. Even the packed size of the tent has been carefully considered where it's short stuff sack can store horizontally in any pack.

Notably, the X-Mid 2 uses polyester fabric for the fly which doesn't sag and absorb water like nylon so your pitch stays tight and the tent stays light and dries quicker, with less time spent adjusting your pitch and drying your tent. Polyester was controversial when we launched the X-Mid with it in 2018 but our passionate advocacy for polyester has led to an industry wide switch with many other companies now following our lead.

SPACIOUS

The patented X-Mid geometry is the most space and weight efficient architecture possible for a trekking pole tent. It accomplishes this with an innovative double diagonal design that puts the floor on one diagonal while the ridgeline is on the opposite diagonal. In doing so, the two poles are set further apart to increase volume without requiring struts, yet remain setback from the edges to avoid a boxy shape that would be less stormworthy and require more fabric.

The result is a 'real' 2P tent that provides comfortable space for two occupants. That includes a generous 52" wide floor and a long 92" length that accommodates hikers up to 6'4". The diagonal ridgeline increases headroom and allows the two occupants to move further apart for greater personal space.

Additionally, the dual vestibules are generously sized and easily accommodate packs and other items without blocking the doorway or creating a long reach to close the fly doors.

QUALITY

The X-Mid 2 is built at the most experienced premium tent factory in the world who have been building nothing but tents for nearly 70 years. Here, we go beyond normal standards to specify premium components and robust construction methods including full double stitching, double folded edges, high precision narrow seams and seam taping, and generous bartacking. We know of no other tent that matches this build quality.

This focus on quality gives the X-Mid 2 a higher cost of production than competing tents, yet the X-Mid 2 is priced affordably. This is possible because we sell directly to you with no retailer markup and only a modest markup ourselves.

Magnetic Toggles

Magnetic door toggles with pull tabs provide easy one handed-operation for both the fly and interior doors.

Large Doorways

Unlike most trekking pole tents, the doorways are large and not blocked by trekking poles. They also have a overhanging design to keep out falling rain when open, and can be propped open with a stick or pole to create a 'porch'.

Full Coverage Fly

The fly extends low to the ground to block drafts and rain splatter, yet can be raised higher for more ventilation. Other tents cut away the bottom of the fly to save weight but this leaves you more exposed.

Stormworthy Shape

The X-Mid provides the ideal shape with consistent and moderate panel slopes. All the panels are an ideal 50 - 55 degrees which balance wind and snow shedding to provide excellent all around performance. Most tents are less consistent with a mix of shallower panels (worse for snow shedding) and steeper panels (worse for wind performance).

Ample Headroom

The X-Mid's offset poles provide a longer diagonal ridgeline that extends the headroom over more of the tent to increase space. Two people can comfortably lay the same way while having ample clearance to transition from laying down to sitting up without hitting the tent, and room to sit up anywhere in the tent.

PATENTED GEOMETRY

The X-Mid shape has been developed from the first principles of geometry to be as weight efficient, simple, and functional as possible.

Our unique design has been successful in avoiding all the common pitfalls of trekking pole shelters such as a complicated pitch, mandatory guylines, poles blocking the doorways, and a lack of interior volume.

The PERFECT Tent

Hans Christian Andersen wrote the following: “Where words fail, music speaks”. The Durston X-Mid is a SYMPHONY. There are so many aspects of the trail experience that are interwoven into the design of this product. It's rare to receive a tent, set it up in your back yard (as so many of us do), and literally not want to take it down. With each setup variation, more advantages come to the fore. The tent is roomy on the x, y, and z axes. The tent is smartly designed - opening and closing the vestibule has always required such a reach, but not with the X-Mid. I feel fortunate to own a piece of ARTWORK created by Mr. Durston, and can't wait to get it out on trail later this month.

Buy this tent!!!

At first I was hesitant about purchasing mid x 2p for my week long elk hunt. I spent months researching just about every single UL trekking pole tent out there. I found things that I didn’t like with the other tents, for ex. Packed weight, having to add seam sealer (no biggie), not tall enough, price. This tent checked off just about every box that I needed, only thing I have to maybe complain but it’s a really easy fix is the guy line, not enough reflective, but again it’s a easy fix I can switch it to a different color to see it a little better. This tent is seriously the best for your buck. Looking at high end UL tent priced from $399-799, this tent is literally right up there with those tents. Packed weight without the stakes or footprint came in at 1.9lbs. Now out on the field is where the test came in, still having some doubts every doubt I had went out the window. We got slammed by heavy rains 4 days in a row, no leaks, the vents are perfectly located that I had minimal condensation. One of those nights we had high winds, I didn’t add any extra stakes to secure the tent I used 7 stakes total. The tent stayed up all night I had no sagging, no collapsing, zero issues. In fact I had other hunter stopping by our camp and checking out my tent and asking questions about it. Love the space inside and outside the tent too. Fantastic design I can’t wait to go on my next camping adventure.

I used the X-Mid 2 for 32 nights straight on the CT and through sun, wind and rain and it worked perfectly every night. Setting up in the rain with the pack protected and dry was invaluable. The inner bug netting liner worked incredibly well, especially to reduce condensation on those cold, wet mornings. Being 6’5” the 2-person was excellent for my use with loads of space inside and in the vestibules for my equipment. I could not be happier.

Nice hike! Thanks for using our gear.

Disappointing experience in the Pyrenees and the French Alps

I've used the x-mid 2 a lot this summer.

The tent is indeed comfortable to use and easy to set up on wide camping spots.
At higher altitudes, and in more rocky or steep terrain—such as in the Pyrenees or the Alps—bivouac spots are often surrounded by rocks creating a circle, to provide wind protection and to clear the surface.
Unfortunately, this tent is often too large for those bivouac spots, even in its narrow configuration.
This may sound minor, but it can be extremely frustrating—especially when you arrive late to a bivy spot only to find that none of the sites will fit your tent.

Lastly, while the zippers are smooth at first, they tend to get stiffer with use and exposure to dust. I don’t have the impression that they will last 10 years, which one would normally expect from a high-quality tent.

Thanks for sharing your experience and I'm glad you are liking the tent when the sites are large enough.

For small sites/ bivouac spots, yes I agree the X-Mid 2 is not the ideal choice. It is quite a spacous tent 2P, and trekking pole tents can't curve the walls steeper to trim the footprint, so something like a small freestanding tent like Samaya would be a better fit for that application.

For the zippers, we use YKK zippers that are the same type of zippers as almost all ultralight tents. On the regular X-Mid we have varied between the lighter #3 size or tougher #5 size. I suspect you have the #3. If you do want a tougher zipper, we use the #5 size on the 'Solid' version of the X-Mid. These are high quality zippers, but the lighter ones will need more care and cleaning to have a long life than a heavier zipper.

Awesome tent!

Just spent a week in the Sawtooths in Idaho, my first backpacking excursion with this tent.
Had some dry days, and had some rain and hail. Love the ease of set up. And the interior space is plenty comfy/roomy for me at 6’2” 200lb. My last tent was another 2P trekking pole brand/style, and this X-Mid 2 provides some very much appreciated upgrades/features. Ease of set up/getting a good pitch….awesome. Vestibule space is very accommodating for all my gear. LOVE the magnetic ties for the fly. It made getting in/out super easy. Also love the upper vents and how the lower venting can be adjusted. I packed a dry tent every morning except one, and it had rained just before dawn. Also very much appreciated the interior height. I could be up on my knees and my head still had clearance. Also, it proved very convenient that the door openings are on reciprocal sides, allowing me to pick which direction sleeps more comfortably (without re-pitching) when it is hard to determine the exact nature of the slope. The near vertical walls on each end also made this option very convenient. Clips at the bottom of the fly zippers were also nice. They can help relieve tension on the zipper, and they also allow some venting variability since the zippers can be opened while still keeping the doors closed. Packing it up is also a breeze. I had it packed into one of the exterior water bottle pockets (where you’d put a Nalgene). And I certainly noticed the fly material did not sag or need adjusting/tightening when it rained. If your initial pitch is solid, then the tent proved stable in the wind/rain we experienced. I did not encounter some of the nastier storms I’ve been in like the Weminuche wilderness of CO, but I’d have no qualms taking this tent to the CDT for an extended trip.
Overall I’m very pleased with this tent. Thanks Dan Durston, for such a well thought out design.

Glad you're loving the tent. Not sure if you meant to put 3 stars (it sounds like you're quite pleased).

Thanks for using our gear,
Dan Durston
