The X-Mid 2 Solid has been updated for 2025 with redesigned pockets, dual fly zipper sliders, improved hardware, and high precision narrow seams and seam tape. The result is a more functional tent at a similar weight.

Pinnacle of Lightweight Tent Design

The X-Mid 2 Solid is a variant of the award winning X-Mid 2 that is tilted more towards use in the shoulder season, cooler conditions, and wind-swept areas like Northern Europe, while remaining an excellent all around backpacking tent. Like its sibling, it has been developed from the first principles of geometry to be the most weight efficient design for a trekking pole shelter. No comparable tent under the 2.5 lbs (1.1 kg) mark offers such a well rounded mix of stormworthiness, spaciousness, and simplicity, which is why the X-Mid 2 has become one of the most popular and highly awarded tents in recent years including top awards from BackpackingLight, The Trek, and Section Hiker.

STORMWORTHY

Most ultralight tents are designed more as fair weather shelters where they achieve their low weights by compromising in durability and stormworthiness. With the X-Mid 2 Solid, performance in tough conditions is a top priority, therefore the X-Mid saves weight through efficient design. This allows us to make a tent that is both ultralight and capable for tough conditions.

The X-Mid 2 Solid has a comprehensive set of protections including a full doublewall design, full coverage fly (extends low to the ground to blocks drafts and splatter), fly first pitch (keeps the inner dry during setup in the rain), polyester fabric (doesn't sag and loosen like nylon), large adjustable vents, robust waterproof coatings, durable 20D fabrics, factory waterproofed seams, and protected doorways that keep rain out even when open. No other tent offers this full list.

USER FRIENDLY

When you're tired at the end of a long day or the conditions are rough, it's essential to have a tent that performs simply and intuitively. To achieve this, the X-Mid 2 Solid is designed from obsessive attention to detail and from Dan Durston's extensive backcountry experience.

The result is the X-Mid's simple pitch with only 4 required stakes. There are no mandatory guylines, odd angles, or guesswork, which is a refreshing contrast to most trekking pole tents that require numerous stakes, guylines, and struts as part of a complex pitching process.

The eye for usability continues when the tent is set up including large doorways that are not blocked by trekking poles, roomy vestibules that are located beside the doors instead of blocking them, magnetic door toggles, a collection of 4 thoughtfully placed pockets, and one handed operating zippers.

Even the packed size of the tent has been obsessed over and optimized into a short shape that can store horizontally in any pack.

Top Pick

"A winning combination of low weight, a ton of livable area and great condensation control.”

SPACIOUS

The patented X-Mid geometry is the most space efficient architecture possible for a dual trekking pole tent. It accomplishes this with an innovative design that sets the two poles further apart for greater volume and headroom, while keeping them set back from the edges to avoid a boxy shape that would be less stormworthy and require more fabric.

The result is a generously sized 2P tent that provides ample space for two adults. That includes a 52" wide floor that fits the widest pads, and a long 92" length that accommodates hikers up to 6'4". The diagonal ridgeline also allows the two occupants to move further apart for greater personal space.

The dual vestibules are also generously sized and accommodate large packs and everything else - all without blocking the doorways.

QUALITY

The X-Mid 2 Solid is built at the most experienced tent factory in the world, who have been building nothing but premium tents for nearly 70 years.

In partnership with them, we go beyond high standards to specify premium components and robust construction methods including full double stitching, double folded edges, waterproof seam construction, and generous bartacking. We know of no other tent that uses double stitching as extensively as we do.

This focus on quality gives the X-Mid 2 Solid a higher cost of production than competing tents, yet the X-Mid 2 Solid is priced affordably because we sell it directly to you with only a slim markup.

Magnetic Toggles

Magnetic door toggles with pull tabs provide easy one handed-operation.

Large Doorways

Unlike most trekking pole tents, the doorways are large and not blocked by trekking poles. They also have a protected design to keep rain out even when open, and can be propped open with a stick or pole to create a 'porch'.

Full Coverage Fly

The fly extends low to the ground to block drafts and rain splatter, yet can be raised higher for more ventilation. Other tents cut away the bottom of the fly to save weight but it leaves you more exposed.

Stormworthy Shape

The X-Mid provides the ideal shape with consistent and moderate panel slopes. All the panels are an ideal 50 - 55 degrees which balance wind and snow shedding to provide excellent all around performance. Most tents are less consistent with a mix of shallower panels (worse for snow shedding) and steeper panels (worse for wind performance).

Ample Headroom

The X-Mid's offset poles provides a longer diagonal ridgeline that extends the headroom over more of the tent. There is ample clearance to transition from laying down to sitting up without hitting the tent, and room to sit up anywhere in the tent.

PATENTED GEOMETRY

The X-Mid shape has been developed from the first principles of geometry to be as weight efficient, simple, and functional as possible.

That includes avoiding all the common pitfalls of trekking pole shelters such as a complicated pitch, mandatory guylines, poles blocking the doorways, and a lack of interior volume.

The X-Mid 2 Solid is a spacious and simple ultralight tent that shines when the weather turns challenging. It's a well rounded tent ready for everything from hillwalks in the UK's Lake District to remote traverses of Alaska's Brooks Range.

After 100 nights

hello tentfriends

after spending approx 100+ nights in the durston x mid 2 solid i want to take some time to thouroughly review it.

first of all - i am SUPER happy to have the solid version. i actually think that it keeps you way warmer at night! i was talking to a dude who bought only the solid inner after having some cold nights in the mesh… hes better now.

in VERY hot summer nights (australian tropics) it is actually too hot. its rare though. after all, super happy to have the solid inner. it is very wind proof as well.

the fly shows no signs of fatigue - no scrathes, holes, no nothing. just a really good, sturdy piece of equipment.

i have minor problems with the zippers of the inner - both sides. that weird thing when you wanna close it then it opens up on you from behind. and a little bit of seam got loose. i dont really blame it - that tent has been thorugh many nights with me already. next time i will be more gentle with these zippers.

what i was really suprised with is how wind proof it can be. i slept on one or the other mountain top with very STRONG winds. give it a good pitch, put a couple extra stakes with it and you will be fine.

i cannot recommend enough the video of mr durstons pitching guide. its gold. i have watched it multiple times. helps a lot. makes you understand the tent.

you will need some time and experience to get the perfect pitch down. anyone can do a half decent pitch really quick, which is more than enough for most camps, but to get a really good one you will need some practice.
a bit of adjusting here and there - and voila - a beautiful, sturdy and nice tent.

you can pitch the tent according to your needs - if you want more airflow you can pitch it higher, if more windproof, lower.

i have 120cm trekking poles and they have always been enough for a good pitch.

i actually live in this tent right now, with my partner. we spend every night in here. it is a true 2 person tent, with enough space to sleep very well and have cuddles here and there ;)

after some time i had to exchange the little stake ropes at the corner of the fly. they got worn out, and actually loosed on strain. i have put in a slightly thicker rope - it works PERFECT now. and only cost me a dollar.

without a groundsheet the floor of the inner might not be 100% waterproof - if there is a puddle underneath you after rain, some wet might get through. never had a problem pitching on wet grass though, which is nice.

stargazing mode must be much better with the mesh inner. its nice with the solid version too - but you wont see many stars through the fabric.

what else can i say… i think it is my favourite piece of gear i own! nothing to complain really. i love this tent. will get another one!

good hikes and camps to everybody out there

Wow that is great you have used it so much! Thanks for the kind words and detailed review. I'm glad it working so well!

A real eye opener

I don´t know how they have done it, but the Durston X-Mid 2 Solid is, for me, one of those quantum leap forward products that are so very rare these days.

It is incredibly lightweight and yet sturdy in its construction. The floor space, head height and vestibule areas are very generous, and it is also super simple to pitch. In the past, I have always had to make the usual compromise between space and compact design, but this tent doesn´t demand that choice. I can have both!

Honestly, although I haven´t used it on a serious trip yet, this tent sort of blows me away. I bought an expensive one person tent from a well known brand not long ago and thought it was an exceptional design, but the X-Mid 2 totally puts it to shame. The Durston product is as light, vastly more spacious, and cheaper!

How is it possible to have such a spacious tent in such a compact and lightweight design? Clearly, a lot of well informed design choices have gone into this tent. It´s very hard to fault it. I am really looking forward to using this tent.

Thanks Peter. It is nice to hear you are appreciating the design.

Fantastic tent

After having this tent for just about a year now I absolutely love it, perfect combination of light weight and so much space!
I've used this tent in all weather, from torrential downpours and winds in the Swiss Alps, to a -4⁰C camp just last week in England, this tent has been brilliant. For me it comes into its own with how quickly you can set it up - especially if you get caught out in rain.
If you are undecided on if this tent is for you, don't hesitate and you will not be disappointed!
Worth every penny.

Brilliant design, beautifully executed

I’ve just returned from a trip where I got to use the x-mid 2. It was incredibly easy to set up and tweak, and it performed beautifully. There is plenty of room for two people, and the vestibule areas are very spacious. It’s great being able to store backpacks and boots etc tucked up near the poles in the vestibules, and have lots of room to enter and exit the tent. I also really like how easy it is to adjust the set up depending on conditions e.g. changing the fly configuration for more shade, more breeze etc. There are so many little details that have been considered in the design too. For example, the storage pockets on the walls of the inner are in locations that are handy, but also don’t cause the inner to sag under the weight of the contents (which I’ve had happen with other tents). Then there’s the way the bathtub is supported so it stands up properly. And the one handed zipper operation, or how much space there is between the fly and the inner (to avoid wetting out) and lots more. I really appreciate the thought and care that has gone into the design of this tent. The sil poly fly doesn’t absorb water and get heavier the way nylon does. And the tent packs small and is very lightweight. It also appears to be very well made. I’m looking forward to using it on many, many more trips.

Durston X-Mid Solid 2 tent: lightweight innovative poles almost all season tent

Hello family Durston,

I want to thank you for your innovation and efficient delivery.
I am very glad and excited I received today the X-Mid Solid 2.
I found the material was of good quality, very well manufactured and packaged, well described on the website, and finally properly delivered and in perfect condition.

Equipment : X-MID Solid 2 tent + stakes + groundsheet + ironwire + poles
Weigh : approximately 1.5 kilogram

Order : 21st June 2025 = 414 euros (at Durston website directly)
Shipping : 25th June 2025 = 26 euros (with FedEx)
Custom : 27th June 2025 = 139 euros (33% taxe of total product value)
Total : 579 euros (equipment + shipping + custom taxes)
Delivery : 30th June 2025

Some remarks though:

1/ It is a very easy tent pitch, and although it is possible to store the tent altogether already assembled, with everything already attached, I would recommend to separate each parts each time, because if it rains, then it seems better to mount the tent fly first with the poles, to secure a dry space, and then under such fly protection standing up, to connect the ground sheet and the inner tent (which would be only 6 buckles to clip, so if the ground were wet, only the groundsheet would be in contact with the wet land).

There is online a dedicated and mandatory Durston video to watch, explaining how to setup the fly tent and how to fix terrain particularities... I believe the particular innovative geometry of the lightweight but sturdy and weather proof tent, would require some attentive practice in order to adjust all the parts tight and accordingly to the moment conditions, for a "perfect pitch"... Basically the process is very simple though, when making sure the fly is correctly tight in a rectangular shape...

The tent bag is just barely enough large and tight right to store all these necessary parts (fly, inner, groundsheet, stakes, iron wire cordage). Because it is my understanding that it is best to separate each time the fly from the inner along with the groundsheet, I would think that it would be fortunate and nice to have two separate bags for such storage (one bag for the wet fly, and a second bag for the dry inner).

2/ I was a little bit disappointed with the poles, as I found the carbon tubes quiet thin.

It seems unfortunately that there is not any bag specifically for holding and storing the tent poles within a backpack.

My humble opinion prefers aluminium over carbon, as I have noticed many times in other's experiences, that very often the carbon trekking poles break and required to be replaced.

3/ The stakes are in aluminum (not in titanium as I wondered after reading an internet review, but coming with its own storage bag), as well as the Iron Wire cordage are both very well. I read though that the stakes easily bend compared to the MST Groundhogs in a "Y" shape. The stakes bag is not rectangle but oblong (seemingly to spare tissue). It is possible to order the tent without the stakes.

4/ I was much concerned about the unknown amount of the European custom frontier taxes (which I had to pay after placing and paying the order), and I received an email from FedEx, to pay online, which was done easily.

I think it is also nice to offer the possibility to customer to buy the Durston products directly from an European retailer.

I want to thank the family Durston company for the outstanding innovation and quality of the design and materials, as well as for the high standards of communication that they offer, through the website and the support, bringing to the people an excellent product choice, that correspond to the needs and the state of the art...

With gratitude and congratulations

I am glad and reassured to have with me such a lightweight innovative but also reliable and sturdy tent, so I can transform my personal hiking gear list and choices, to hopefully leaning towards the "fast backpacking" configuration.

Thank you again for the kindness and well oriented sensibility and touch, that you have chosen to add and polish to such a growing outdoor business, as more and more people in all their own diversity, are becoming aware, that profits and numbers on the bottom line are not everything in life, and that positiveness and honesty in relationships are everything to start and continue well...

With thankfulness and gratitude

Thanks for the kind words and detailed feedback. Glad you are liking the tent.

Yes the pitching video is very helpful and it is much better if people watch this and practice.

For the Z-Flick poles, we have been using those for several years and are seeing excellent results with them. It is almost unheard of for them to break, so we like how light they are compared to aluminum, but we do agree if someone is not as concerned about weight and using them in severe conditions then aluminum poles would be nice for peace of mind.

We did change away from titanium stakes a few years ago. We like titanium, but it is about the same weight as aluminum and that design was not as strong, so our current stakes are similar weight and stronger. We find them very similar to MSR Groundhog. We make the stake bag a tapered shape so it is wider at the top for easy inserting.

Thanks for your kind words Patrick.
