X-Dome 1+

Our next release will be the new aluminum pole version on November 4 at 10 am MT, followed by a release of all versions in late December. At that time we will have greatly improved supply and expect we can get everyone a tent. Please sign up to be notified when these batches are released. The X-Dome 2 is available in stock now.
More Functional Freestanding Tent Design
The X-Dome™ 1+ is a generously sized one person freestanding tent made by combining our unique X-Mid floorplan with a maximally weight and strength efficient pole set to improve spaciousness, stormworthiness, and simplicity in an ultralight tent. At just 35 oz (980 g), the X-Dome 1+ is amongst the lightest fully freestanding doublewall tents in the world, while being more spacious, stronger, and more user friendly than comparable tents. It is the ideal 3+ season shelter for any solo hiker preferring a freestanding tent.
PROTECTIVE
The patent pending X-Dome 1+ achieves improved strength for an ultralight tent through its unique geometry, use of carbon fiber tubing, high tenacity silpoly fabric, and a pole set designed for optimal structural efficiency via larger diameter spine tubing. The result is a highly capable shelter with up to 3x the strength of other ultralight tents.
While you'll probably never need to do this, the X-Dome allows trekking poles to be added to complete the crossbar into a robust extra arch to further increase strength. The poles are added in a unique counter balanced position where they support the sidewalls from deflection and provide greater rigidity.
What matters more to us though than outright strength is "practical stormworthiness" - how liveable the tent is in tough conditions. Here the X-Dome excels with an overhanging doorway (so rain doesn't fall inside), a fly first pitch (to keep the interior dry during setup in the rain), 100% polyester fabric (non-sag and dries fast), dual peak vents (to minimize condensation), and double wall protection. No other ultralight freestanding tent can claim this list.

SPACIOUS
The X-Dome 1+ is a palatial 1P tent with a large floor, outstanding headroom, generous length, and a spacious vestibule. It can fit one person easily with room to spare, and can even squeeze in two adults.
The floorplan is based on the unique parallelogram design of our X-Mid series tents, but with the floor expanded to fill the back vestibule - giving an excellent 23 sq ft (2.2 sq m) of space. This floor widens to a luxurious 50" (1.3 m) at the head end, while the length is 85" when sleeping straight and tall hikers can sleep diagonally for an outstanding 90" of length - all of which is highly useable due to the steep end walls.
The interior volume and headroom is increased by the variable radius pole set which curves the end walls steeper to increase volume, while a cross bar expands the peak height over more of the interior. The interior height of 42" (1.1 m) is generous, 3-5" taller than comparable tents, and extends over a larger portion of the tent. Even on a thick pad, you can sit up anywhere.
Lastly, the vestibule is conveniently positioned beside the main doorway (instead of blocking it like most tents) and has a generous size of 9.2 sq ft that easily fits the largest packs with extra room for cooking, shoes, and wet gear.

SIMPLICITY
Simplicity is a huge focus with our tents because when you are tired at the end of an ambitious day, or rough weather is rolling in, you want a tent that is fast and simple to use.
That starts with the pitch, where the fly, inner, and poles all extend to the same four points so you can pitch the tent in any order. It can pitch fly first to keep the inner tent dry during setup in the rain, but just as easily pitch it inner first to stargaze on clear nights. The X-Dome can pitch with the fly and inner added separately or pre-connected to save time, and it is 100% freestanding without need for any stakes, cords, or guylines (you should always stake your tent but with the X-Dome you can let the conditions determine which ones).
Another big focus was the doorways, which use a crossbar to increase the height and an angled zipper to widen the opening - giving an oversized door for easy entry. The smaller side of the door can be secured with a stake or trekking pole to shelter the vestibule, or rolled back to completely open the tent. All doors secure easily with magnets and the unique floorplan gives a short reach to close the fly door.
The X-Dome also improves your experience with fast dry/non-sag polyester fabric, a fully connected pole set (no pieces to lose or step on), interior hang loops, dual pockets, and a compact footprint that fits onto any tent site.

External Carbon Fiber Poles
The X-Dome uses premium Easton carbon fiber poles which are positioned externally (outside the fly) so the tent can pitch fly first to keep the interior dry during setup in the rain, but also pitches inner first just as easily for stargazing.
Since the poleset goes to the same 4 corners as the inner and fly, the X-Dome can pitch in any order, with the inner tent combined or added separately, and it is 100% freestanding with no mandatory stakes - including being able to deploy the vestibules without stakes via a trekking pole.
Crossbar + Trekking Poles
The X-Dome poleset uses an integrated cross bar to increase the interior headroom while making the doorway taller (for ease of access) and overhanging (so rain doesn't fall inside).
The crossbar also enables trekking poles to be added to complete the cross bar into a extremely sturdy additional arch. These trekking poles anchor to the bottom of the tent fly where they are counter balanced (angled inwards) to directly support the sidewalls against deflection during storms while giving the X-Dome far higher strength than most other ultralight tents.
High Tenacity Polyester
Unique among ultralight freestanding tents, the X-Dome uses 100% polyester fabric (instead of nylon) because polyester doesn't soak up water, expand and become slow to dry like nylon. With polyester the X-Dome stays lighter, tighter, and dries faster than other tents.
We've been able to create a tent this light while using polyester thanks to a new high tenacity version which offers unprecedented strength for the weight. The 15D polyester used here is comparable in strength to 15D nylon and similar or stronger than most 20D polyester on the market.
Generous Vestibule
The vestibule on the X-Dome 1+ is generously sized (9.2 sq ft / 0.85 m) and positioned beside the doorway (instead of blocking it like most tents) so you can cook or store a backpack in the vestibule while still easily getting in and out of the tent.
The vestibule is also highly versatile. You can protect the area by staking the smaller fly door flap with a tent stake or trekking pole or fully open the fly and the vestibule is still protected by an overhanging awning. The interior can open on both sides to fully open the side of the inner tent and allow excellent vestibule access.
Highly Spacious
As a "1+" sized tent, the X-Dome 1+ is far more spacious than other ultralight 1P tents.
The X-Dome 1+ has a generous 90" of length and a floor that widens to 50" at the head end (you can even squeeze in two pads) plus lofty headroom from the 42" peak height that is preserved over a large portion of the interior.

QUALITY
In addition to the high performance design, the X-Dome offers exceptional quality. That starts with premium materials including high tenacity 15D silpoly and optional Easton carbon fiber poles which enable substantially higher strength for the weight. Durston has long been a leader in advancing polyester for lightweight tents, so with the X-Dome we are introducing a next generation high tenacity silpoly with unprecedented strength for the weight. This high tenacity silpoly allows us to make a lighter 15D silpoly with strength that is similar or higher than most 20D silpoly.
We take these materials and craft them into the X-Dome at arguably the most experienced tent factory in the world for premium tents. We use advanced construction methods like high precision narrow seams, narrow seam taping, waterproof seam construction, generous double stitching, ample bartacking, and double folded edges.

Overall, the X-Dome 1+ is a truly special freestanding tent. With a weight close to 2 lbs (less than 1 kg) it is among the lightest doublewall freestanding tents while being more spacious, stormworthy and user friendly than comparable tents. It protects with a fly first pitch and robust structure, comfortably accommodates with class leading interior volume and floor area, and is simple to use with large doorways and a zero stake pitch. The X-Dome 1+ is the ideal freestanding tent for adventures from Torres del Paine to the Te Araroa.
For the X-Dome 1+, all three of the pole set options have similar sturdiness and wind limits. Where they differ is in weight, packed size, and cost.
For most people we recommend the carbon pole set. It provides high performance at the lowest possible weight.
The aluminum pole set is more affordable though, so it is ideal for price sensitive people, and for people who prefer the proven performance of DAC aluminum poles over the weight savings of carbon, even though both pole sets have similar wind limits.
Lastly, the carbon short set is ideal for users who place an emphasis on a short packed length, such as bikepackers and hikers preferring to store the tent horizontally inside their packs. This pole set is again about the same strength, but adds a bit of weight and cost over the regular carbon set as it divides the same tubing into more sections to fold shorter (13" vs 18").
The X-Dome is a doublewall tent with a waterproof fly and a separate interior. We offer two types of interiors: regular and solid.
The regular inner of the X-Dome is mostly built of mesh but with a strip of solid fabric around most of the lower walls. This is fully bugproof and provides good ventilation in hot conditions while also blocking some drafts in colder conditions. The solid inner increases the solid fabric so the entire interior has solid walls with mesh window that can optionally be opened on the upper half of the door.
The regular interior is a good all-around choice for a blend conditions. Where the Solid interior improves is that it is warmer and less draft in cold conditions, and also blocks blowing sand and dust better, with the downside that it can be too warm in really hot conditions.
95% of the time either interior will work fine but the regular is recommend for all around use while the solid is recomended or colder areas like Europe and for winter use. If you frequent both hot and cold areas, we will make the inners available separately so you can have both.
With our first batch of poles in late 2024 our manufacturer (Easton) had a production quality issue that affected our poles and many other brands, where the metal inserts (joints) between the sections were not glued well enough into place and could come loose.
This could result in a pole set that can not easily be assembled (if the insert slides inside the tube) or could break (if the insert is partly out of position and not supporting one side).
We take reliability seriously, so we were the only tent brand to publicly acknowledge this issue even though it affected many of our peers. We then worked with Easton on improving their glue process and sent out free replacement pole sets to all first batch customers.
Since then, we saw a big improvement in reliability but still a few lingering glue issues at the top of the tents where there is higher stress on the joints. We continued to work with Easton and in summer 2025 were able to switch to carbon inserts here with dramatically higher bond strength. This technology appeared first in our tents, but is now being used by many other brands also using these poles.
Since then, the carbon inserts have been working perfectly with zero reported issues. Aside from the original glue issue, we also have never seen the pole sets break except for clear misuse, so today the carbon poles sets are highly reliable and an excellent option.
With that said, we understand that some people are simply more comfortable with a traditional aluminum pole set, so we have also added an aluminum DAC option. This is ideal for people who are more comfortable with aluminum or who prefer the more affordable price point. We do recommend the carbon set for most people as it offers the highest performance for the weight.
If you sleep "straight" (along the backwall) in the X-Dome 1+ then the length is 85" and with the steep end walls that is almost all quite useable, so the length is about average for a tent and should work to about 6'2".
However, the unique trapezoid shape of the floor allows you to sleep on a diagonal (like our X-Mid series) which adds 5" of length so it is excellent for taller hikers with about 90" of length. We recommend the tent up to 6'6" when sleeping on this diagonal but the actual max height can be more or less depending on individual factors like sleeping bag size, how straight you sleep, and how much room you expect.
The X-Dome is simple enough that you can probably just lay out the tent and figure it out, but for the best results we recommend watching our pitching video.
Briefly though, the most common approach is to lay out the fly, assemble the pole set, clip the pole set to the 4 corners of the fly and then connect the rest of the clips between the fly and poles. The interior may already be connected inside, but if not, lay it out with the wider end to the left and then connect all the buckles. If you want to pitch inner first, clip the interior to the poles instead of the fly.
The goal with the X-Dome is to make a very capable all around tent while keeping the weight ultralight. We do not call it a 4-season tent, and it's main focus is 3 season backpacking, but for many people it will be sturdy enough to use year round.
More specifically, the definition of a "4 season" tent is imprecise because some people use it to mean a tent that can be used in the winter (which is almost all tents), some people use it to mean a tent with a solid interior and snow skirts (which is a winter only tent), while other people use 4-season to refer to a tent that can survive extreme mountaineering conditions (which is very few tents).
The X-Dome is a very capable tent that for most people can be used on all of their trips. It can survive big snow loads and fairly high winds (especially with the optional trekking pole supports). With almost no skill it can be used in winds up to 50 km/hr. With good skill in using guylines and deploying stakes, it can be used up to 70 km/hr. We do not recommend it above that, but it can be used higher than that with advanced skill and higher risk acceptance.
Overall, the performance depends partly on the tent and partly on the user. We designed the X-Dome as an all around ultralight tent that can work for 98% of conditions, but it is not as sturdy as a much heavier 4-season rated tent. We prefer to call it a 3+ season tent, while noting it will be suitable for many winter trips.
The X-Dome is designed with a maximally weight efficient design including the simpler rectangular fly, structurally efficient pole set, and advanced materials like carbon fiber, so there is not another comparable tent that offers similar or more capability at a lower weight.
Of course there are other tents that are lighter, but these will always be smaller, less durable, reduced functionally (e.g. singlewall, non-freestanding) or all of the above.
The lightest 1P tents are very small inside and either not freestanding or semi-freestanding. In the niche of fully freestanding tents, all of the double wall tents are similar in weight or heavier than the X-Dome 1+ while still being smaller and less protective.
The only exceptions to this are tents that use much more expensive Dyneema based fabrics (which we offer in our other tents and hope to introduce to the X-Dome series). If you are after a fully freestanding, double wall tent with woven fabric, the X-Dome 1+ is amongst the very lightest options while being much more spacious and stormworthy than comparable.
The X-Dome is built with top of the line materials including Easton Carbon poles, custom hardware, and advanced high strength polyester fabrics, and it is constructed at the same high end factory that builds many of the world's top tents with premium construction including double stitching and high precision narrow seams.
This gives it a substantially higher cost of production than comparable tents with aluminum poles, generic fabrics, and less robust stitching - yet we are able to offer the X-Dome for a lower price because we sell it direct to you (without a 50% retailer markup) and we only have a slim markup ourselves.
Essentially, we eliminate the retailer markup and instead invest most of that into making an even better tent, while passing along the rest to you as cost savings. Even at a higher price, you can’t find higher quality than the X-Dome.
Our tents and passionate advocacy have been a major reason for the modern movement towards polyester in ultralight tents. When we introduced the X-Mid with polyester in 2018 it was controversial. Many other companies were initially skeptical of our fabric choices before later switching themselves after our tents demonstrated the strength potential of polyester and set of standard of fabric sag being unacceptable.
As background, in the 1980's only nylon was available in the lightest weights so it became popular in lightweight tents even though it absorbs water and expands - making the tent loose, structurally unsound, and slow to dry. With modern advances in polyester to reduce the weight and increase the strength, polyester can now be similar in strength while being a much more suitable tent fabric because it has much less water absorption, dries faster, stays lighter, and remains taut in the rain.
With the X-Dome 1+, we are again moving things forward with a new generation of high tenacity polyester fabrics. These may exceed all other lightweight polyester in strength:weight.
The X-Dome uses a new high strength version for polyester for the floor. It is a fairly durable tent floor, but still is a balance between low weight and durability so some care during use is recommended.
We have selected this material for the floor because we think it is as light as possible while still being reasonable to use without the added weight and hassle of groundsheet. However, that does assume you apply some care to avoid sharp objects like sticks and sharp rocks on your tent site and that the site is a normal surface (e.g. dirt). Many people will prefer to be careful and not use a groundsheet, but a groundsheet is recommended for harsher surfaces like gravel, pine needles, or bedrock, and also provides a cleaner floor and added peace of mind. We expect about half of owners will opt to use our groundsheet. We suggesting being careful and not using it, but you may wish to have it for harsher surfaces or times when lightweight is not a priority.
