The 2025 Wapta 30 is now available. Updates include a removable top strap, updated hardware, and re-shaped side pockets to improve ease of use.

The Wapta 30 is the premiere frameless backpack for the ultralight hiker. Built with cutting edge ALUULA Graflyte™ material, the Wapta combines innovative features with advanced construction and ergonomic shaping. The result is a pack that weighs as little as 13.6 oz (385 g) while being highly functional, durable, and comfortable. The Wapta 30 is the ideal overnight pack for the ultralight hiker and an excellent day hiking pack for everyone.

MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION

With the Wapta 30 we are proud to introduce the first ultralight pack built with ALUULA fabrics. ALUULA has a proprietary process that solves the longstanding problem of how to fuse a durable waterproof film to extremely tough UHMWPE fibers. The result is ALUULA Graflyte™ which is the first composite pack fabric with a 100% UHMWPE woven face to achieve lower weights while retaining excellent durability. The version used here weighs just 98 g/m² (2.9 oz/yd) while offering higher tear strength and abrasion than all comparable fabrics - making an ALUULA pack both lighter and stronger.

ALUULA's Graflyte™ also has many other advantages including more durable long term waterproofness because their proprietary fusion process avoids glue (which adds weight and can fatigue). ALUULA Graflyte™ is also stain proof, UV resistant, fully recyclable, low water absorption, edge stable, and heat bondable.

With the Wapta 30 we are taking advantage of these characteristics to build a lighter, simpler, and more functional pack. For example, we heat weld airmesh strips to the backpanel for ventilation and we take advantage of the edge stable nature of this fabric to laser cut drain holes in the pockets and laser cut tougher ALUULA Durlyte™ into daisy chains that are lighter than traditional webbing.

FEATURES

The Wapta's feature set is carefully designed to provide excellent on-the-go access to your gear while improving durability, versatility, and simplicity.

Most uniquely, the Wapta has a bottom pocket that provides quick access to larger items like mitts and hats while solving the common problem with previous bottom pockets: the use of low durability stretch mesh in this high wear area on the pack. Instead of stretch mesh, the Wapta uses pleats (folds) to create the first bottom pocket without the vulnerability of stretch mesh. A similar philosophy applies to the front pocket, which is a generous size and also built from ALUULA to be more durable yet lighter.

ALUULA Graflyte Fabric

Graflyte™ V-98 fabric from ALUULA is an advanced pack fabric with a 100% UHMWPE weave face fabric and tough interior film that is molecularly fused on. It has higher tear strength and abrasion resistance than even other UHMWPE based fabrics while being waterproof, recyclable, UV resistant, edge stable, and heat bondable.

Ergonomic Hipbelt

The Wapta's hipbelt uses an advanced design including a differential cut (so the hipbelt naturally wants to curve) and 3D shaping (to cup your hips) which improve comfort. The belt is removable for those who want to go even lighter.

Airmesh Ventilation

Airmesh strips are heat bonded to the backpanel to provide a more comfortable surface and add ventilation without compromising the waterproofness of the pack.

Durable Pockets

The front pocket, side pockets, bottom pockets, and hipbelt pockets are all made from ALUULA Graflyte which is far more durable than typical stretch mesh pockets. We also use "protected elastics" where the elastics are sewn inside the main fabric to guard them from damage.

Laser Cut Details

The "daisy chains" on the sides of the pack and shoulder straps are laser cut from ALUULA Durlyte™ to provide a highly versatile attachment system at a lower weight than webbing. This system accomodates a wide range of compression and attachment needs including ice axe and trekking pole attachment. We also use laser cutting to create simpler and lighter drain holes on the pockets.

Even though the Wapta is a superlight pack, it still has important features like hipbelt pockets and side water bottle pockets. The hipbelt pockets are large and designed for easy one handed operation, while the side pockets have adjustable tension and are shaped with a low cut front edge for easy access. There are also dual shoulder strap pockets that work great for phones, bear spray, and small water bottles.

The side compression and top strap contribute to making this pack simpler, lighter, and more functional. The side compression uses dual straps which open, close, and cinch at a single buckle. The laser cut ALUULA Durlyte™ daisy chains make this area highly customizable to enable a diverse range of storage and compression possibilities including ice axe and trekking pole attachments. The top strap is a V shape that better secures items on top, while using the same dual adjust buckle so it is quicker to use than traditional V top straps.

COMFORT

Despite being a frameless pack aimed at lighter loads, the Wapta places a major emphasis on comfort including our most advanced shaping yet.

That includes shoulder straps with an S-shape similar to our larger Kakwa packs. This shape has been very well received and fits almost everyone better than straighter straps. The shoulder straps also have a differential cut to naturally curve over your shoulders, and feature laser cut daisy chains that provide a wide range of up/down adjustment for the sternum strap.

Most packs in this niche lack a hipbelt or use a minimalist webbing belt, while the Wapta provides a robust padded hipbelt that is three dimensionally shaped to hug your hips and yet is removable for trips when you want to go even lighter.

Most notably, back ventilation is unprecedented in the 1-lbs pack niche and yet the Wapta has dual air mesh strips heat bonded onto the backpanel to provide padding, a nicer feel, and ventilation.

Overall, the Wapta 30 advances what is possible in an ultralight backpack. No other pack near the 1 lbs mark (0.5 kg) has this much functionality, durability, ease of use, and comfort. The Wapta is the ideal pack for adventures from a dayhike up Yosemite's Half Dome, to an FKT of the Colorado Trail, or a superlight thruhike of the Continental Divide Trail.

Compare

COMPARE

The Wapta 30 stands out by offering a fully featured and durable frameless pack for the lowest weight, greatest comfort, and highest build quality.

While you can find lighter packs, any such pack will be lacking worthwhile features (e.g. shoulder strap pockets, hipbelt pockets, padded hipbelt) and using less durable materials. Any pack with a comparable feature set will be heavier, more expensive, and still lacking the high end construction and materials of the Wapta along with comfort features like air mesh on the backpanel.

To demonstrate this, the table below compares the Wapta 30 to what is typically found in competing packs:

Wapta 30 - Initial review after 2 overnight trips

Well thought out pack, everything you need and nothing you don't. Fits my body well and is very comfortable (carrying approx. 5.5kg). I'm looking forward to taking on multi day trips. My only reservation is the longevity of the seam tape, it wasnt fully adhered everywhere out of the box and some caught on my quilt when packing and peeled further. I've pressed everything back down best I can and added some patches over where the tape terminates in couple of places to hopefully prevent snagging and peeling. This isn't a massive problem for me as I keep my sleep kit in a dual use pump sack/dry bag.

Amazing comfort

Only managed a few trips so far with my Wapta, and I am impressed. Shoulders feel great, especially with some soft bottles in the front pockets. Stable, no digging, easy to access everything. Thank you, Dan-I can’t wait to have more adventures now!

Wapta 30

Love this pack. Carries 15 pounds on a day hike with the hip belt taking some of the weight off my shoulders. Easy to reach water bottles in the side pockets. My one suggestion for the pack is to include an interior sleeve for keys and wallet.

Great pack, comfortable fit, beware the sizing hiccups for females

First I want to address the sizing guide. As a female, there are a couple things to consider to not make the mistake I did and order the wrong size. I originally
followed the sizing guide and purchased the medium pack with s/m hip belt. My measurements are 18.5 torso, and 31 waist. I am 5'10.5" I tried for a couple weeks to make it work, but the chest strap pockets road so high, my chin would brush them if I put anything inside and looked to the side. The hip belt; my waist may be 31, but my hips are wider causing the pockets to be located under my arms and wrapped around from my back making them very difficult to get open (or into) while wearing the pack. So if you don't have straight hips, consider sizing up. Putting that behind, I ordered a large with a med/large hipbelt and now I will get into the great parts.

It arrived in 5 days! Thank you. And last weekend I took it out for an overnight test run. First, no bear can needed on this trip and my base weight is about 12 pounds. Throw in a few pounds of food, a good bit of water and some I carried about 20 pounds when the water was full. Very comfortable. I've never had a pack wrap my shoulders so nicely. The side pockets securely hold two smartwater bottles. Sadly, I need to figure out a work around because I like to carry one smartwater bottle and my BeFree 32oz together in a pocket. They fit, but I cannot get them to slide back into the pocket together while walking and wearing the pack. The fabric does not stretch, good for durability, hard for ease of use while wearing it. The durability all over appears stellar. I had to play around with how to close it in order to stop the crinkling noise while walking/moving. (I'm curious to know if there is a reason to have the main closure close together like a dry bag instead of down to each side. It is the loop/bend of fabric that allows it to move and make noise while walking.) The bottom pocket is a nice addition, but a little tough to get into as the side pocket contents block the opening, especially if you carry your water on the right.
I was concerned the pack would be too small (been using a Gossamer G4-20 (42 liter) pack the past few years. I am impressed with how much it holds and how it carries. I'm excited to have new pockets for organization and to leave my rain cover at home. Comfort alone has me dreaming of the next trip....until then. Thanks for the great innovations and thought put into the Wapta. I look forward to many a crooked paths with it.

Thanks for your message, kind words, and thoughtful feedback.

As you mention, sizing does depend on a lot of factors. We give a torso length for each size but often it is difficult and someone imprecise how that is measured, and even if that was perfect it can be affected by how the pack is adjusted. And then the shoulder straps will have the pocket placement affected by factors like someone's chest size (as you mention) and also shoulder size and if the size is a bit long or short. For the waist size, we have an FAQ on that and our sizing is meant to be the circumference where someone will actually wear the hipbelt (on the hips) rather than the waist that may be different.

So it is helpful to hear about your experience and I appreciate that feedback. I am glad you were able to swap it for the right size and have a good exxperience with that.

For the roll top noise, this is a bit hard to explain but if when you clip the buckle you do it on the other side of the roll (like joining your hands behind your back instead of in front of you) then the roll will naturally want to twist DOWN instead of up, which gives a nicer look and should help with that loop moving.

Have fun on those crooked paths :)

Hopeful for Future Versions

I ended up returning the pack, but I’d really like to buy it again if a few things get fixed.

The top closure system is awkward. When the pack is full, the top buckles don’t close properly. A more natural way to strap it down would be to the sides, but the side buckles don’t fully match up with the top ones. You can buckle one side but not the other without modifying it. It’s possible to tweak, but at this price, I kind of wish I didn’t have to.

The back padding is strange, too. Instead of something removable like mesh or a daisy chain for a pad, it uses hot-bonded foam that can’t be taken out when needed. It’s not as versatile as I’d like.

Another big issue is the buckles. They’re non-standard, you can’t just grab a replacement from anywhere—you’d have to go through Durston. That’s a bummer because it limits repairability.

Material is still a bit of a mystery. It’s new to the backpacking scene, so I’m skeptical, but I’m open to seeing how it holds up.

Also, no whistle on the sternum strap buckle. It’s a small detail, but it’s something I really miss. It’s handy in an emergency.

Overall, the pack is solid. It’s ultralight, and the design works well, but the FAQ claims it’s good for 7-day hikes, and that seems a bit much. Maybe 4-5 days max if you’re small and light, but 7 days seems like a stretch unless you're Samwise Gamgee.

If they fix the buckles and make the back padding more versatile, I’d definitely consider buying it again. Fingers crossed for the next version!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feedback. I will provide some replies on why things are designed the way they are.

For the top closure, there are two ways of doing this. Both sides can clip to each other or both sides could clip down to the sides of the pack. Due to hardware limitations, we cannot make a system that works in both ways so I have chosen to go for the former system because it is simpler, lighter, and quicker to use. It requires less hardware and only doing up one buckle each time instead of two. If you roll the top in the correct direction, it will lay flush on the backpack and not stick up. If you do prefer the other style though there are conversion kits available on Etsy.

Regarding the buckle compatibility, we have not used a buckle that is uniquely specific and hard to source. There are hundreds of different types of buckles and almost all of them will only work with matching parts because buckles are not universal. With this pack we are using the Z buckle from Woojin. This is one of the more popular and easy to find types of buckles. We can provide spare parts directly, or you can get them at avariety of online shops. We do have a special version with our logo on them, but it does not affect the compatibility. For the sternum strap, we do not spec the version of the buckle with the whistle, but this is available and would be easy to add on if you wanted to change that.

Regarding the bonded strips on the back panel, my goal here is to provide some padding at the lowest possible weight and greatest simplicity which I think these strips are provide. If we had a full padded back and made it removable, then it would probably weigh 2 to 3 times as much. The current strips are so light that there’s not really a reason to remove them since they only add about 10 g. I do recognize that people have different preferences so this is not for everyone, but I do think it is a good system that keeps the weight to a minimum.

We are also seeing good results of the fabric. It is a lightweight fabric, but giving us very good performance considering how light it is. Reports of damage are very rare and we have never seen any delamination.
